Kinan (Mayan for “solar winds”) is a forthcoming collaborative CD (no. 6 in my 2012 Stories series) with gong artist Heidi Svoboda. The collaboration between Heidi and me brings together her celestial gong sounds, which extend far beyond our physical plane and out into planetary realms (they are attuned to the vibrations of specific planets), and my music, based largely on sounds of Mother Earth that I have recorded over the years. We are presenting this collaboration in live performance for the first time with “Harvest moon: a meditative sound bath with the earth and sky” in Kansas City, Missouri, to celebrate the New Moon on September 27.
On this CD and in performance we create a space in which cosmic energy is pulled down to Mother Earth, where it is so needed right now. Water plays a significant role. It is one of a few things (along with trees!) that connects sky and earth. Water comes from the sky in the form of both rain and snow. It bubbles up from pools and flows out of the earth, and it returns to the sky through invisible evaporation and visible steam.
The CD and live meditation ceremony follow the Chinese Bagua system of elements: Thunder, Wind, Fire, Earth, Lake, Heaven, Water and Mountain. This system starts with one of the most powerful manifestations of Water: a storm. Wind moves Water, whether in a rainstorm or on the surface of a placid lake, and Fire mixing with Water makes steam. Interestingly, Fire and Water share many of the same sound qualities, sometimes making recordings of them indistinguishable. Life on Earth, at least as we know it, is possible only because of Water, and Lake (or pool) is one of three manifestations of water in the desert that Craig Childs talks about in his deeply touching book The Secret Knowledge of Water. Heaven is where the invisible evaporation (heat) remanifests to form clouds (vapor) and rain (liquid), and it is a place that Mountain aspires to. Mountain knows all three forms, even simultaneously, and is where Fire meets Water (volcano) and where Water goes in all directions: up from the ground, evaporating to the sky, sitting solidly as snow and steaming off of rocks.
“Harvest moon: a meditative sound bath with the earth and sky” is about energy flow and feeding Mother Earth. Water is a grand metaphor for spirituality and corporeality, and one of the most tangible expressions of the cycle of life in its energetic and physical evolutions.
